What should I be looking for?
Children who have missed expected developmental motor milestones should be evaluated by an Occupational Therapist (refer to the web page on “milestones”).
If a child seems squirmy and in constant motion, or appears too busy and unable to settle down, he or she could have self-regulation difficulties. If a child has trouble using crayons, pencils, scissors, putting puzzles together, or has a strong aversion to types of movement/sound, dislikes haircuts or tags on their clothes, or often seems clumsy and uncoordinated, he or she could be delayed in the area of Sensory Integration. Children who exhibit these signs would benefit from an Occupational Therapy assessment to identify the source and potential need for service.
