What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy is a therapeutic intervention that assists individuals in becoming as independent as possible in their life role or "occupation." For children their life occupations include playing, learning, attending school, and interacting with others and within their environment.

An occupational therapist can evaluate a child's play, educational readiness, and self-help skills and compare them with what is developmentally appropriate for that age group.

According to the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), OT practitioners not only address an individual's physical well-being, but also look at the psychological, social, and environmental factors that can hinder an individual's level of function. This unique approach makes occupational therapy a vital part of the health care team for kids.
